Click-to-Call and Direction Optimization for Nashville Businesses
On this page
For a Nashville service business or a place people visit, the phone call and the directions request are the actions that come closest to a sale. A searcher who taps “Call” on an HVAC company in Antioch or asks for directions to a Germantown boutique has already decided to act, so the job is to make those two taps easy and obvious: a working phone link, a call button big enough to hit, a Business Profile pin on your actual front door, and directions content that removes the friction of getting there.
Why these two actions
A local searcher does not add to cart and check out. They call or they drive over, and those two behaviors match the two main kinds of local business: service businesses that win the job on the phone, and destinations people visit. Google shows both as actions on the Business Profile and reports them. Its Performance metrics include “Calls: The number of times a customer clicked on the call button on your Business Profile” and “Directions: How many people asked for directions to your business” (Understand your Business Profile performance and insights), so changes show up in numbers you can watch.
Treat them as separate conversions. A plumber serving Rutherford County wants the call. A vintage shop on 8th Avenue South wants the directions request. A med spa in Brentwood may want a booking above either. Choose the primary action for the business, then remove friction from that one action.
Click-to-call: the link and the button
The link. Every phone number on the site should be a real tel: link, so a tap opens the dialer with the number filled in. A number that is only text, or worse an image, makes the visitor memorize digits and switch apps. Keep the displayed format readable, a standard 615 or 629 number with familiar grouping, while the link carries the clean digits.
The size. A call button that is too small produces missed taps, especially one-handed. The accessibility standard sets two levels. WCAG’s minimum criterion says “The size of the target for pointer inputs is at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels” with listed exceptions (Understanding Success Criterion 2.5.8: Target Size (Minimum)); the enhanced criterion raises it to “at least 44 by 44 CSS pixels” (Understanding Success Criterion 2.5.5: Target Size (Enhanced)). Google’s Lighthouse audit adds a practical line: “Tap targets that are 48 px by 48 px never fail the audit” (Tap targets are not sized appropriately). For a call button, aim for the larger sizes.
The placement. On a service-business page, the call action earns a persistent place, such as a sticky header or footer bar, so a visitor deep in your service description can still tap to dial without scrolling back.
The context. Put what a caller wants to know next to the button: current hours, whether you answer after hours, and one line on what to expect, such as “same-day diagnostic visits available,” stated only if true.
Measure calls without changing the number people see. Keep one consistent number on your profile, site and listings, and track taps on the tel: link or calls at the destination instead of swapping in different numbers.
Match the button to the business
A persistent call button suits emergency and service businesses whose customers are ready to talk. For a shop or restaurant, a prominent directions or booking action does more than a sticky call bar. Decide by what the business needs the visitor to do, not by a rule that every page needs a call button.
Business Profile actions by type of business
The Business Profile shows Call, Directions and Website actions, and categories that support them can add actions such as booking, reservations or ordering. What is available depends on your category, so check what your profile offers rather than assuming a fixed set.
Map the action to the business. Home services and emergency trades lead with Call. Retail and showrooms lead with Directions. Healthcare practices, salons and restaurants can lead with a booking or reservation action tied to a working scheduling page. Enable the action that matches your main conversion, make sure any booking or order link leads to a working page, and watch in Performance which actions customers use.
Directions: the pin and the arrival
A directions request means someone is about to drive to you. The first fix is the pin. Google’s profile editor has an “Address and pin location” section and asks you to “Enter the full and accurate address of your business location” (Edit your Business Profile). Open your profile in Maps and check that the marker sits on your actual building, not a parking lot two doors down or the wrong side of a divided road. On busy stretches such as Music Row or Lower Broadway, a pin off by a block sends customers to the wrong storefront. If you move, note that the same page says “If you move your business to a new address after it’s verified, you must verify your business again.”
Then remove the friction of arriving:
- Parking: where it is, whether it is free, and the nearest paid lot or garage.
- Landmarks: what people see as they approach.
- Access: one-way streets, which side of the building the entrance is on, and the nearest interstate exit if customers come from I-40, I-65 or I-24.
- Event days: when a stadium event or a busy Broadway night clogs downtown, a short note about the best approach helps.
Both actions on a phone
A local visitor may be standing on the sidewalk. A tap on your directions link should hand off cleanly to a maps app with the destination set. Keep both actions visible without pinch-zooming, and do not bury them under large hero images. Check the change in Performance: a corrected pin or a larger button should show up in the call and directions trends.
